Latium
Latium is a hilly region of central Italy that stretches between the jagged coasts of Tyrrhenian Sea, dominated by noteworthy ports such as Civitavecchia and Fiumicino, and the steep chain of the Apennines. This unique region is unrivalled as a cradle of all-time art, history, architecture, culture and religion: the remains of the Roman civilization can be admired almost everywhere, while those related to the Etruscans can be found for example at Cerveteri and Tarquinia. Apart from Rome, the capital of Italy, other important tourist destinations are Tivoli, where can be visited Villa Adriana, Rieti, Latina and Sperlonga. Tivoli is a pleasant ancient town near Rome, surrounded by luxuriant olive groves and renowned holiday resort in Roman times. This delightful town is rich in stupendous 16th century villas: a splendid example is Hadrian’s Villa, a large archaeological site world-wide famous for its magnificence. Ponza is the largest volcanic island of the Pontine Archipelago, fortunate in having a great number of well-preserved archaeological ruins scattered on its surface: Egyptian, Greek, Phoenician and Canaanite are just some examples. The island is also renowned for its Blue Grottos built by the Etruscans and the Roman Gallery, an ancient tunnel that connects the town of Ponza with the beautiful sandy beach Chiaia di Luna.
