Campania
A vibrant region of southern Italy overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, with a breathtaking landscape that makes it unique in the world: this is Campania! The alternation of mountains, hills and plains, the crystal-clear waters of the Amalfi Coast, the lovely islands of Ischia, Procida and Capri, the treasures of its many archaeological and historical sites such as Paestum, Pompeii and Herculaneum…all this and much more can be admired in a holiday in this paradisiac place. With Naples as regional capital, this region is the birthplace of the world-famous pizza, a baked product born in honour of Queen Margaret and now appreciated by almost all; but Campania is also known for spaghetti, mozzarella di bufala, a kind of cheese, limoncello, a lemon liqueur created in Sorrento, and a great variety of cakes and pies such as babà, a pastry made with rum, or pastiera, a typical cake with ricotta cheese. The 50 km (31 miles) long Amalfi coast stretches between Vietri sul Mare and Sorrento, and with its romantic inlets, its small and cosy bays, and its beautiful beaches, it’s one of the most amazing coastline in Europe. Tourists are attracted in this idyllic place above all by its splendid natural heritage: the unforgettable crystal-clear sea, the unrivalled gray sandy or rocky beaches, most of them reachable only by foot or by boat, and last but not least the still untouched luxuriant Mediterranean vegetation; all this has been declared World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. Along the windings of this charming coast rise small pretty villages that really merit a visit, like Amalfi, one of the four Maritime Republic and centre of Muslim and Byzantine art, Sorrento, the place that fascinated the poet Torquato Tasso with its tufa cliffs, its colourful orchards and its spectacular sea of the Sirens, and also Positano, a picturesque resort with step streets and multicoloured pretty houses. Heavenly island of Capri within the Bay of Naples was known among the Greeks as the island of the sirens and it was the favourite resort of the Roman emperors. The charming landscapes, the unpolluted and crystal clear sea and the beauties of the nature make this place unique in the world. In this treasure chest rich in wondrous surprises, visitors cannot fail to be delighted by the Blue Grotto, an astonishing cave at the water’s edge in which can be admired breathtaking lighting effects, and also by Villa Jovis, the beautiful residence of the Emperor Tiberius. There are so many wonderful places to see that there is sure to be something for everyone!Pompeii and Herculaneum are two archaeological sites situated at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, not far from the sea, sadly famous because of the eruption of 79 AD that buried these small towns for almost 1800 years, preserving them until their miraculous rediscovery. Today these stupendous historical gems have been declared World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO and are visited every year by thousands of tourists. Paestum is an archaeological site were can be admired the best preserved standing remains of three noteworthy Greek temples in Doric style. These beautiful ancient art treasures were consecrated to Hera and Athena and dating from the beginning of the 6th century BC. To the north of this unique historical site, rises the modern town of Paestum, a charming spot and, with its long sandy beaches, also an ideal place for holidays.
