Apulia
Apulia is the region lying in the south-east of Italy, exactly on the heel of the peninsula between the Ionian and the Adriatic Seas. This suggestive place, with its 800 km long coasts, its blue unpolluted waters, its mild climate during all the year, its delicious food and its rich cultural and artistic heritage attracts visitors from all over the world. Tourists are strongly advised not to miss Bari, the regional capital, the unique Trulli of Alberobello, traditional conical constructions, Castel del Monte, a beautiful castle declared World Heritage Site by the UNESCO, but also the marvellous towns of Otranto, Leuca and Taranto. The peninsula of Gargano, rich in stupendous beaches with all kind of facilities, is a small strip of land partly mountainous and partly covered by the Foresta Umbra, the only beech and oak forest in Italy dating back to the prehistoric period. Most of the area has become in 1995 a beautiful National Park, with a great floral and faunal variety and including the enchanting Tremiti Islands, a real natural treasure and a paradise for sea lovers and scuba divers. Impressive 13th century octagonal castle situated on a hill in the town of Andria, Castel del Monte was used as hunting palace by the Emperor Frederick II, than it became a prison and today it’s an important pole of tourist attraction. This majestic construction is based on number eight: eight sides, eight octagonal bastions, eight rooms for each floor and in the centre lies an eight-sided courtyard, all this may have an astrological or esoteric explanation. Since 1996 Castel del Monte has been added to the list of World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO, and it is also featured on the reverse of the Italian 1 Euro cent coin.
